New Fat Camp to Open in UK

A unique “fat camp” could soon open in Suffolk following investment by a local businessman.
Glen Moulds is keen to build a purpose-built weight management camp called EAT4U. He hopes the camp will combine education and physical exercise to help obese people lose weight.
“I think it is going to be bigger than people realise”
Visitors to the camp will take part in a seven-day residential course which will include educational training for the best ways to shop, cook and eat food. (more…)
Theme Park meals full of salt, fat and sugar!

Children are at risk of being subject to “overwhelmingly” high levels of fat, salt and sugar when they consume a meal at leisure parks or other days out, according to a new report.
The food available at leisure centres, theme parks, wildlife parks and heritage sites all contained high levels of fat, saturated fat, salt, sugar and protein said the Local Government Association.
“Britain will continue its slide towards the unwanted title of fat capital of the world”
Environmental health and trading standards officers across the UK tested 397 different meals 7-10 year olds at 220 sites for a day out. (more…)
Fight against fat is a major industry

In a world where more people are overweight than underfed, according to the World Health Organisation, the fight against fat has become £726 billion industry - and is set to increase to by 2012.
The main people to benefit from this is through new diet treatments and medical devices for an increasing number of gastric band operations. The market for food targeted at people trying to lose weight - and bigger clothes for those struggling to do so - will grow by more than 9 per cent annually until 2012, according to research by Credit Suisse.
Populations will grow fatter as emerging economies become wealthier. The number of obese people in China is expected to rise by 347 per cent between now and 2015 as the Chinese buy more processed food. (more…)
Is the natural sugar in fruit ‘fuelling the nation’s obesity epidemic’

A natural sugar found in fruits could lead to obesity if it is used to sweeten foods and could be fuelling the epidemic
A study has shown that fructose - which is used to sweeten soft drinks and junk food - might be more harmful than other types of sugar.
In tests, fat people given large doses of fructose were more likely to put on weight around the stomach than those given glucose.
Doctors say this ‘intra-abdominal fat’ is the most harmful type and is linked to diabetes and heart disease.
Pure fructose is found in fresh fruit, fruit juice and jam. (more…)
Controversial diet drug approved

Rimonabant is a controversial new diet/obesity drug which has now been approved for NHS use in England and Wales despite links to an increased risk of depression and suicide.
Rimonabant is already used by thousands of Britons, and, coupled with exercise, could help patients lose up to 10% of their body weight.
Although approved in the UK the US have yet to do so,due to the safety concerns of this drug.
Obesity specialists have however welcomed Rimonabant for those people who have tried everything else, including other drugs, with little success, who might benefit from it. (more…)
