The clock is ticking for millions of clinically obese people in the UK, but thanks to Cambridge technology time could still be on their side.
Weight-watching takes on a different slant now that Cambridge Consultants has developed the wrist worn ‘MiBand’, a completely new type of device which continuously tracks activity levels throughout the day.
“The device is comfortable to wear 24/7 and withstands water and dirt.”
The MiBand, which requires very little user-input, sends its data to a behavioural coaching system called MiLife which then provides health and fitness guidance. Trials have shown users increase activity by more than two hours a week. (more…)

Obesity appears to increase the risk of miscarriage, according to a new study.
“Obesity has been described as the new worldwide epidemic, and as the (rate) of obesity increases, so does the number of women of reproductive age who are becoming overweight and obese,” Dr. Mostafa Metwally and colleagues from the University of Sheffield, UK, write.
“Overweight and obese women were 67 percent more likely to have a miscarriage.”

Health experts believe the narrowing obesity gap shows how schemes to tackle the country’s weight problem are having less effect on men, with women more likely to go on diets or join a gym. (more…)

Officials are urging school kids to get stuck into traditional playground games like British Bulldog in a drive to combat obesity.
Councils are being issued with a list of the top 10 activities for break-time to get pupils moving.
Parents and teachers are told to defy the cautious compensation culture which has seen many games killed off.
“Booming child obesity problems coincide with recent changes in playground habits.”
The Local Government Association (LGA) — which represents more than 400 councils in England and Wales — wants the return of several traditional favourites.
